Originally from Amanzimtoti, South Africa, Former Surfer Magazine Photo Editor, Grant Ellis discovered what would become his life long passion for photography back in the early 90’s. Ellis started surfing as a young boy at age 8 and has never ventured far from the water since. After studying commercial photography in Durban South Africa (1992-1995), Ellis took his natural skill for photography and combined it with his love for surfing and started shooting for the local South African surfing magazine’s.
After a life changing trip in 1998 to the North Shore shooting portraits of the Sticky Bumps surf team, Ellis knew that it was where he wanted and needed to be. In 2001 he held two positions; one with Surfing Magazine and the other to cover the World Tour for Swell.com. For the next 17 years, Ellis could be found at Surfer Magazine as Photo Editor. He has been inspired every day by working with some of the worlds most accomplished surf photographers and surfers. Grant has spent the past 20 years traveling the globe documenting Surfing and the Surfing lifestyle. He is now photo editor at the esteemed Surfers Journal, as well as continuing his careers a surf Photographer.
